The School of Materials Engineering was established in 1958 and is one of the oldest departments in Changshu Institute of Technology. It was initially named Department of Biochemistry, then School of Chemistry and Materials Engineering in the following decades. It was officially renamed as School of Materials Engineering in December, 2019. Now we offer five undergraduate programs, i.e., Applied Chemistry, Functional Materials, Material Science and Engineering, Metal materials Engineering, and Safety Engineering. Material Science and Engineering is the pilot specialty of national "Excellent Engineer Program". Currently, over 1500 undergraduate students are studying in the School.
The School has made remarkable achievements in the construction and development of academic programs, faculty team, teaching and academic research, talent cultivation, laboratory, and public service. At present we have 93 faculty members, including 16 professors, 30 associated professors, and 26 master supervisors. They have hosted 30 national science funding projects and 50 ministerial and provincial projects. Over 300 research papers have been published on Nature Commun, J. Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Funct. Mater..
The School encourages students to participate in competitions to improve their practical and innovative abilities. In the past three years, our students have won more than 100 important awards in national and provincial competitions, such as “Challenge Cup”, Chemical Skills Competition, Metallographic Skill Contest and other contests.
We have developed international partnerships with universities around the world including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), University of Aveiro (Portugal), Aston University (Britain), Kyoto University (Japan), University of Twente (Holland), Chonbuk National University (Korea), etc. In 2018, approved by Jiangsu Education Department, it has developed a “1.5+2+0.5” dual-degree undergraduate program on Materials Science and Engineering with University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (USA) with an annual enrollment of 30 undergraduate students.
