The School of Mechanical Engineering was founded in 1976. After more than 40 years of consistent efforts, great progress has been made in the construction of academic fields and disciplines. Currently, the School offers three undergraduate specialties: Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, and Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. Mechanical Engineering is a feature specialty of the university and a key specialty of Jiangsu Province as well as a pilot specialty of the National Excellent Engineer Plan. In order to actively contribute to regional economic development and cooperate with local advantageous industries, the first Mechanical Engineering (Elevator Engineering) undergraduate specialty of China was set up in 2010. In the same year, with the approval of the Education Department of Jiangsu Province, the "3+1" international course experimental class of mechanical and electrical engineering was jointly established with the Diploma Fachhochschule Nordhessen. In 2011, this project was approved as a Sino-Foreign cooperative undergraduate education project by the Ministry of Education. In 2018, it was approved as a training site for the third batch of high level demonstration projects of Sino-Foreign cooperation in Jiangsu province. In order to meet the development needs of major pillar industries and strategic emerging industries in the Yangtz river Delta, the specialty of Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2020 with an aim to provide more competent graduates for the intelligent manufacturing industry. In the past three years, a total of 73 graduates successfully enrolled in postgraduate programmes of universities ranked top 300 in the world or TU9 German Universities. Since 2012, we jointly trained more than 70 graduate students with China University of Mining and Technology, Soochow University, and Jiangsu University of Science and Technology. At present, the School has more than 1200 full-time undergraduates and more than 20 graduate students.
Currently the School boasts 79 faculty members, including 54 full-time teachers -- 7 professors, 1 senior research engineer, and 19 associate professors, accounting for 50% of full-time teachers. 31 teachers have doctorate degrees (14 were born after January 1, 1985), accounting for 57.4% of full-time teachers. 20 teachers were trained in engineering schools, accounting for 37.0% of all faculty members. 7 teachers have overseas study experience. In recent years, 3 members were selected as developing targets of Jiangsu “333 Project” and 4 are in “Jiangsu Six-Type Talented Faculty Sponsor Plan”. As for Jiangsu “Qing-Lan Project”, 1 faculty member was selected as a Leader of Innovation Team, 3 were considered as developing targets for Young Talented Scholars, and 1 was selected into Academic Leaders. In addition, 1 faculty member was selected in “Suzhou Urgently-Needed Talented Scholar Plan”.
In recent years, its faculty members have undertaken more than 80 scientific research projects, including 5 national-level projects, 9 provincial-level projects, and nearly 50 industrial projects. Research funds of these projects exceeding 20 million Yuan. Faculty members published more than 200 academic papers, 50 of which were admitted by Science Citation Index (SCI) and Engineering Index (EI). More than 120 patents were applied and approved, including 30 invention patents.
The School provides excellent teaching and training environment to students. It has built more than 30 basic and professional engineering labs, 6 training labs, 3 students innovation laboratories, 1 national electrical and mechanical engineering practice center, 1 provincial key laboratory working on elevator intelligence and safety technology, 1 provincial key laboratory working on mechanical and electronic products recycling technology, 1 provincial mechanical engineering comprehensive training center, and 1 intelligent manufacturing engineering practice and innovation education center. These laboratories and training centers cover an area of more than 13,000 square meters, and the total value of the equipment is more than 30 million Yuan. In addition, the School has cooperated extensively with nearby enterprises and has built more than 20 off-campus practice centers, which has formed a relatively comprehensive in-campus and off-campus teaching and practice system. Curriculum experiments, practice training, and internship opportunities, effectively ensures the implementation of teaching plans and training of students.
Principles of “integrating multi-field knowledge into the industry", “deepening cooperation between the academia and the industry”, “promoting teaching reform”, and “improving teaching qualities” were put into practice in our training of students. Mechanical Engineering has developed the fields of mold design and manufacturing and bearing design and engineering. Mechanical and Electronic Engineering has developed robot and elevator engineering. And Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering has established intelligent equipment design and manufacturing and intelligent assembly, constructing an application-oriented training mode that is highly compatible with the development of the industry.
The School consistently focuses on developing students' innovation and engineering practice abilities. The faculty members actively encourage and organize students to participate in competitions, such as National College Student Robot Competition “RoboMaster”, National College Student Mechanics Innovation Design Competition, and National College Student Advanced Engineering Drawing and Product Modeling Innovation Competition etc. In recent years, our students have won more than 152 awards in various competitions, including more than 60 at the national level and more than 90 at the provincial level, and published more than 40 research papers. As a result, more than 40 patents were applied and approved, more than 30 provincial innovation training programs were created, and more than 70 school-enterprise cooperative fund projects were approved. After completing their undergraduate or graduate programs, the graduates are rather popular in career fairs with an employment rate of exceeding 98%. And the School was awarded multiple accolades due to its efforts on assisting graduate employment.
